Problems with plugins and Generic Low Latency ASIO driver
Posted by Bob Zawalich - 30 May 11:44PM
This is weird.
I have a Steinberg UR 22 mkII usb audio interface, and it indluded an ASIO driver, Yamaha Steinberg ASIO driver, and it works fine.
At some point, possibly after installing Cubasis or Dorico, I also ended up with a driver called 'Generic Low Latency ASIO driver'. I had problems with it and never used it, choosing the Yamaha Steinberg one instead.
Every once in a while when loading Sibelius, I see flashing and text suggesting that the Low Latency Driver is loading. If I think to look, sometime my Yamaha driver is not in the list, and I change it to something else.
But often I am not interested in the sound so I let it be.
But here is the weird part. If that driver is loaded, plugins fail unpredictably. Just weird things happen. If I load another sound driver, the plugins suddenly work. The plugin usually has nothing to do with the sound.
So I just thought I would warn everyone that if your plugins start weirdly misbehaving, make sure you are not using that driver.
And does anyone know how to totally remove that driver (Windows 10)? It is not obvious and googling has led me in circles enough time that I have been putting up with it. But I would really like to get rid of it.
Cheers

Hello, I've recorded on cubase before using the generic low latency asio and it no longer works anymore, when I switch it on all sound on my pc goes off even after I turn the driver off in cubase and even after I turn cubase of all together, I think it might be the soundcard, but I want to absolutly certain, I've already used asio4all and that was working for about a minute before it had the. Choosing ASIO drivers, where possible, should help you achieve the lowest latency, using the Control Panel window provided by your particular audio interface. Here you can see the Control Panels for the Echo (left) and Emu (right) ranges, as launched from the Cubase SX Device Setup window.

I just tried ripping it out of my registry which was the only suggestion I found. I will see how that works out..

This sounds very much like the problem I've been having with latency in 8.5.1. I was forever getting 'Audio Engine, Bad Settings'. Plug-ins were taking about 10 seconds to respond and about 1 second delay on everything else, objects wouldn't drag &c. I never discovered what was causing the problem, having to go back to 7.1.3 to get any work done. I have since re-installed 8.5.1 and it seems to be working normally at present. I remain hopeful that the problem doesn't return.

So all it took was a re-installation? Did you do a 'deep' removal first, cleaning out the registry entries and preference files that aren't affected by the standard Uninstall Program method?

Woah, Laurence, you're going too deep for me. I write music. I no nuttin' 'bout modern computer maintenance. Luckily, I have a son who knows a helluva lot more than I. But I am spending a lot of time trying to put my personal preferences back into 8.5.1, so I guess I did get a factory model installed. I wish to thank you and Robin for all your helpful suggestions and advice. Without this forum, I would have gotten nowhere.

As features are added, the Preferences system is modified to cover them. Though we would obviously like to be able to transfer our carefuly set-up preferences from an older Sibelius, it seems better to trash them and start over in the new version.
Anyway, glad you've finally been able to sort out this long-running problem!

I would check with Ulf or Daniel on a different forum. Similar questions have come up before.

I could find no way to uninstall the Generic Low Latency ASIO driver. It does not appear in the Control Panel uninstaller. The only googling I found that gave any answer at all suggesting removing entries in the registry.
I don't really even see a way to tell it is installed other than looking for the name in the Registry.
So I made a restore point and exported the Registry and just removed entries that looked like they were real entries for that driver.
I do not recommend this as a technique because of possible corruption of the registry. I am keeping a close eye on anything that might have used that driver and so far it looks OK.
I just got fed up with weird stuff happening, and at least that does not seem to be happening anymore.
I am pretty sure it came in with a Steinberg product but I didn't find anything googling over there either.

It gets installed with Dorico, for instance.

And I have versions of both. So the source is pretty clear, and my Yamaha Steinberg driver appears to work with them, but I still have not seen any way to uninstall it.
And it really really can screw things up in Sibelius. I have never seen anything like it!

I note that I never chose the GLLA driver in Sibelius. I was using the Yamaha driver, but then at some point I would run a version of Sibelius and in the startup screen I would see a bunch of flashing and the GLLA text was in the flashing text.
It could have something to do with the fact that I have several installed versions of Sibelius and I sometimes run them simultaneously. Possibly that is a bad idea but I had been doing it for years with no obvious bad results. Maybe Sib doesn't like it if multiple versions are running the same ASIO driver?
Anyway, I have not seen and random plugin failures since I did this.

FWIW, I have 6.2, 7.1.3 and Cubase 8 installed on the Win 7 partition of this PC and on a Win 7 Laptop. And 6.2 is also on the XP partition on this PC along with an older version of Cubase and Wavelab.
The Generic LL driver is present on all three systems. It's used on the laptop, which doesn't have an ASIO card and refuses to work with ASIO4ALL. Cubase and Sib work fine on the laptop with the Generic LL driver.
It's not used on the PC, as that has ASIO capable audio cards, but it's still present. Occasionally, I'll load in an old Sib score into 7.1.3 and that seems to do the 'flash' that Bob mentions and change to the LL driver, but it still works fine and I can simply change back to the proper ASIO driver.

When I inadvertently start Sibelius without first switching on my RME Fireface 800 audio interface, the Audio Engine can default to the Steinberg Generic Low Latency ASIO driver. It's just an irritation. I power it up, restart Sibelius, go into Audio Engine settings and switch it back. No huge deal.

My USB Interface is always on; I suspect that either the Yamaha driver is not found or possibly it is being used by another instance of Sibelius running. I will change all but one of the versions to use a different driver and see if that helps.
And I would not care if it was just something funny with the sound because I mostly do not need the sound. But I am seriously annoyed when it messes with my plugins!
