Boston Acoustics Vr 500 Subwoofer Manual

edited December 2009 in Subwoofer Hookup & Bass Management
I just bought an older Boston Acoustics VR-500 sub..it didn't come with a manual. It is a powered sub. On the back it has the speaker wire hookup which I would rather avoid using. It also has FOUR RCA inputs/Outputs that says 'Line Level' over the section where they are. There is 1 set of red and whites that says 'in' and one set of red and white that says 'out'. I imagine that is what I need..but no matter what I do it just doesn't seem to work and hardly any sound comes out. I am using an older Yamaha 5.1 receiver (RX-V800) that DOES have a subwoofer out. I used this receiver with another sub and connected it just fine with my other new subwoofer and it worked great.
FYI..The other controls on the sub is a phase control, crossover control and volume control. Please help..I know the sub works...it's just me and it's driving me nuts!! HAHA!!

Select “subwoofer-no” from your receiver’s set-up menu. This sends the subwoofer signal to the front/main left and right speakers, and thus, to the subwoofer. Consult your receiver’s owner’s manual for more details. Controls Volume: Adjusts the sound level of the subwoofer. A typical setting is around 10 o’clock. The album was another success (debuting at number three on the album charts), and it showed the quintet unafraid to experiment with its sound, as let such '80s modern rock influences as and seep into Deftones' sound. Issued in October of 1997, it more than delivered, catapulting the band to the top of the alt-metal mountain on the strength of such MTV/radio faves as 'My Own Summer (Shove It)' and 'Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).' White Pony was eventually released in June of 2000 and proved to be one of the most eagerly anticipated heavy rock releases of the year. Sometime after the album's release, turntablist/keyboardist (who had helped out on the first two albums) formally joined up and expanded the group's lineup to a five-piece. A seven-track import EP, 1999's Live, was issued as a stopgap release as Deftones began work on their third studio effort (Cheng issued a spoken word release, The Bamboo Parachute, around this time as well). Deftones - lovers.

Did you try running the one rca cable that comes from the subwoofer out of your receiver to each of the red or white LINE IN inputs on your sub? Leave the 'level' gain at about halfway, which is a good place to start.
If you barely get any sound, I'd suggest trying a splitter and hooking up that single end to both inputs on your subwoofer.

It sounds like you checked this, but you may also check to make sure your receiver is outputting from the LFE (subwoofer) channel. Most receivers have a setting to turn the LFE off, and sometimes it can vary by input (ie. dvd, cd, tv, etc.).

My particular unit has a subwoofer out and a subwoofer pre-out which can be confused because i did it. Rca cable to pre-out and select subwoofer on on receiver like Westparker recommended.

Yamaha AVRs have three possible settings for subwoofer output:
    1) Front: This will output ONLY to your front speakers, ignoring your subwoofer. Same as using Pure Direct mode.
    2) SWFR (Subwoofer): This will output the bass that is below the selected crossover setting to the subwoofer only. Bass below this frequency will be rolled off at a roughly 12db/octave slope to the front speakers. Best for clear reproduction of bass and avoidance of standing waves between the mains and the subwoofer.
    3) BOTH: Outputs bass to all possible main channel speakers and the subwoofer simultaneously. Good for movies or if you have your sub placed (and phased) properly to avoid the standing waves noted in #2.
Make sure your AVR isn't set to option #1. As a secondary test, you could also use the L/R outputs to your sub's line level inputs. NOTE: TURN OFF SPEAKERS A AND B BEFORE DOING THIS OR YOU COULD DAMAGE YOUR SUBWOOFER DUE TO EXCESSIVE OUTPUT LEVELS. Start at a low volume and move up. If you still hear little to no bass at the -30db mark, then I would suspect a dud amplifier in the subwoofer. That, unfortunately means you need a new sub unless you can procure the right amp for it.

Thanks everyone..turns out I am a bigger fool than I thought!! I went into my receivers menu and saw that the Subwoofer output was turned all of the way down..which is why I didn't hear anything.. I had the RCA cable hooked up to the right input so at least I am not a total moron... Everything works great now.
    Thanks again!

Boston Acoustics Vr 500 Subwoofer Manual
edited February 2009 in For Sale (FS) Classifieds
I am selling the 960's(main L & R) plus this critically aclaimed center speaker (VR12) because I have upgraded my speakers. The 960's are in excellent condition and the center is in very good. The center has a ding on the back edge from something being dropped on it but its not horribly noticeable. I have pictures of the VR12 if someone wants to see the ding in it.
The VR960 is actually a two way speaker with a built in powered subwoofer. The subwoofer is powered by a 75 watt amp mounted into the bottom of each speaker box. The subwoofer itself (8') is mounted to fire out of the side of the enclosure. These speakers are each shipped as a dedicated left or a dedicated right speaker.
There is a five way speaker connector mounted toward the bottom on the rear of the enclosure. The only controls to be found on these speakers is for the subwoofer volume. Adjusting this will only affect the subwoofer and causes no noticeable coloration to the midrange or high end output of the system.
Specifications for these speakers (for those who care) as stated in the manual which came with these speakers are as follows:
Frequency Response (+/-3db) 29-20,000HZ
Recommended Amplifier Power 15-150 watts
Normal Impedance 8 ohms
Sensitivity (1 watt (2.83V) @ 1 METER) 90db
Subwoofer Amp Power 75 watts RMS
Bass Unit 8' (200mm)
Midrange 4 1/2' (115mm)
Tweeter 1' (25mm) anodized aluminum
Dimensions 421/4 x 61/2 x 14'
(1073 x 1665 x 356mm)
Weight 50lbs (23kg)
Finish Black cloth with
gloss black top
VR-12 Specs
Lynnfield 1' VR Tweeter
Dual 6.5' full-range
4.5' midrange
5-way rear binding posts
Black Ash finish (w/grill)
Dimensions: 25'W x 9'Deep(with grill) x 8.75'H
I'm asking $300 for the 960's and $200 for the VR12. I have the original boxes and packing for all. Buy both and i'll split the shipping with you
