Introduction

The Doom plugin is NOT a viewer. It is run from the plugins list, similar to Jewels and the others.Rockdoom is a modified version of PrBoom version 2.2.6. PrBoom is a source port of the Doom engine that adds many new features to the original game. Most of these features are only noticeable in addon WADs, but some are visible immediately for example translucent sprites (fireballs, plasma, etc.). An explanation of PrBoom's history is also available.

Getting Started

To play Doom you need at least the base WAD called rockdoom.wad plus one or more game WADs.

Install rockdoom.wad

Create a directory called /.rockbox/doom/ on your player (i.e. F:.rockboxdoom for Windows users - where F: is the drive letter for your DAP) and save the following file in that directory:

Install the Game WADs

Copy the Doom WADs you wish to play into that directory and start Doom. The files which Doom looks for are:
  • doom.wad: Doom
  • doomu.wad: Doom
  • doom2.wad: Doom 2 - Hell on Earth
  • doom2f.wad: Doom 2 French
  • plutonia.wad: Doom 2 - Plutonia Experiment
  • tnt.wad: Doom 2 - TNT - Evilution
A free alternative for Doom 2 is Freedoom. This can be used in place of doom2.wad or it may be used as an addon in Doom by placing it in the addons directory. It may also be renamed to doomf.wad and placed in the .rockboxdoom directory.The Heretic and Hexen WADs are not supported by Rockdoom.

Disable Voice Options

All settings in General Settings -> Voice must be disabled. See Bugs/Known issues (bottom of this page).

(Optional) Addon WADs

To play addon WADs place the files in this directory: .rockboxdoomaddons. Here is a good link for addons:
  • Top 100 wads: Note: Addons that work with PrBoom 2.2.6 will work in Rockdoom.
NOTE: Please do not upload Doom WADs to this wiki. Aside from copyright issues, this content is better suited to a website specializing in Doom WADs. Feel free to add links to such websites here. WADs that should not be directly linked include ones that contain characters, artwork, sounds, music, or other items that are copyrighted by someone who has not given explicit permission to distribute. Additionally, all links should be to a site where the unencumbered WADs are permanently hosted.

(Optional) Demos

To play demos create the 'demos' directory within /.rockbox/doom. Place the LMP files in this directory. Here is a good link for demos:

Bugs/Known issues

There are still outstanding bugs in Doom. Please either post them on the tracker or here so that they can be looked at.

Music

  • Ingame music is not currently supported.

Addons

  • WADs from GP32 wads - These WADs have modified, non-standard graphics that cause buffer overruns in doom. Rockdoom does/will not support these WADs exiting immediately.
  • A good way to test WADs on the computer to see if they should work is to run PrBoom 2.2.6 with the software renderer. The OpenGL renderer will not work as a check. If the addon runs on PrBoom 2.2.6 with the software renderer a bug report should be filed.
  • These WADs can be fixed using a WAD editor like Deutex to change all the graphics that are oversize or out of range to follow the Doom standards.

Doom Engine

  • Occasionally the game will stall when flipping a switch. This happens because the caching code does not load all of the switch animations. The game resumes after a second or so.
  • All options under General Settings -> Voice must be disabled.
    ('Voice Menus' is on by default, but the voice file needs to be present for this to take effect). Otherwise the engine will crash on plugin menu or game startup with 'Undefined Instruction at (Address)' or similar, requiring a hard reboot. The rockdoom plugin code should be corrected to automatically disable voice during use.

Zandronum's welcome IWAD search window-box will appear when an IWAD is not found within the parent directory.

When Zandronum is loaded for the first time within the Windows® platform it may ask the user to specify a directory that contains either one of or more than one of the listed IWAD file(s). An IWAD or Internal WAD file is necessary in order to play Doom, Doom 2, ZDoom, GZDoom, Zandronum and any other Doom based engine available. Moreover, the IWAD file contains information such as maps, sounds, music, monsters, items, and other visual and environment aspects of the game. As a result, the IWAD file plays an important role with Zandronum and every other Doom based engine, and running any game without the IWAD file is impossible.

Furthermore, if the user has already installed Doom from a floppy disk, or from a CD such as 'Doom for Windows 95' or 'Doom 2 for Windows 95' for example, the IWAD can be used from those installations of Doom or Doom 2.

There currently exists two methods of obtaining the Doom or Doom 2 IWAD file. First method is to purchase the game from, for instance, the idSoftware store, Steam, or Amazon.

Alternatively, one can download Freedoom which is free and legal. This can be an option for those that are short on money, or just want to test out the Zandronum engine before making such purchases. Freedoom is what the name implies, a free and legal remake of Doom 2 for users to download. However, Freedoom is vastly different from Doom 2 and the maps are not network-compatible with Doom 2. Thus, Freedoom is not a true replacement for the original Doom 2 IWAD, and it should never be considered as such. Nonetheless, using the Freedoom IWAD will still allow the users to connect to almost any server plausible.

Zandronum can locate IWADs in several different ways. When the user executes the Zandronum binary, it will begin to look for the listed IWAD files before it further executes into any game. However, if Zandronum can not locate any IWADs, the game will never start. Listed below is ways for Zandronum to find the IWAD files:

  • Duplicate or move all of the files into the Zandronum directory. This method is rather common, but can cause problems if introducing more than one doom port engine or even running the older native engines or can cause more wasted space by duplicating the exact same files within the filesystem.
  • Inside of the config file and already modified IWADSearch.Directories paths.

    Modify the configuration file. This is rather advanced but this is rather preferred to avoid conflicts and duplications within the filesystem. The initialization file houses all of the users settings within the engine and even can enforce the engine to load files that is specified; and, thus, possible for the engine to automatically detect what IWAD files are available.

    1. Open the file with a text editor such as Notepad, Notepad++, VIM, etc. Don't use any word processing software!
    2. Locate string: '[IWADSearch.Directories]'
    3. Add: 'Path=' and the direct link to the directory that contains the IWAD file or files. Add one entry per one directory. For example:
  • Hard Link the IWAD to the parent directory that contains the Zandronum executable binary file. Be sure that both the filesystem uses inode addresses (Linux) or MFT entry (Windows), the kernel allows this type of linking, and that the IWAD files are within the exact same medium and not on different filesystems or partition.


  • Note: If purchased Doom or Doom 2 (or any supported engine that contains the IWAD file) through Steam, the directory can be found at:
